Weekend Wine Features (Sept. 14-16)
September 14, 2012

These wines are open for tasting all weekend at J. Webb Wine Merchant

Our quest for the best of the best wines often leads us to strange places with strange practices and people with a passion that borders on zealotry. While winemaker Jeffrey Patterson seems like a button-down collar kind of guy, he's actually a bit of a wild man! Wild yeast fermentation and daily chats with his vines are just a couple of things that seem out of place in the modern world. Thanks to the beautiful wines he produces, more and more California winemakers are taking his approach, eschewing pesticides and over-manipulation for a gentler touch. Domaine Eden is a second label alongside the highly praised but incredible low yielding Mt. Eden wines. Working with estate fruit a little lower on the slopes of the famed mountain, some younger vines from the top, and choice cuts from the famous Tom Mudd vineyard on the next moutaintop, the wines have finesse now and are great candidates for some short stints in the cellar. See below for more details on the wines and one brand new release exclusive to J. Webb!

2009 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

A dry farming has many challenges but the 2009 vintage wasn't one of them! With the perfect amount of rainfall resultant fruit has an expansive palate of fruit with the classic Eden minerality in a supporting role. An extra step to sur lie age the wine in French oak for 11 months gives the wine has a texture component as well. Hedonists rejoice - this wine can be easily consumed now and for the careful planners out there you have 7-10 years to create the perfect meal for the wine.

2010 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir

Easily the varietal most associated with Mt. Eden, Pinot Noir is the flagship wine for the estate. A long and cool growing season, 2010 was a classic Pinot Noir vintage, with harvest taking place in late September. Aging in Burgundy barrels for 12 months creates classic Pinot softness and the decision to bottle the wines unfiltered results in rich flavours of blueberry, pomegranate and black cherry with an underlying earthiness. To get that silky note we love in Pinot we recommend cellaring for 7-15 years.

2008 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

A true Bordeaux style, this wine is comprised of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 3% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec, all five grapes from the famous region! Striving for the perfect representation of the Santa Cruz appellation, Jeffery uses 50% French and 50% American oak to give the unfiltered wine some suppleness beyond the grape tannins. Not a typical California fruit bomb, this is elegance at its best. Savoury spices support the gentle fruit characters of black cherry and cassis with the telltale Santa Cruz chalky texture lengthening the finish. You can expect this wine to evolve perfectly for the next 15 years.
